Earley and Surrounding Area Pub Guide

Berkshire pubs at their finest

Berkshire offers something special when it comes to local pubs. There are a wide range of pubs housed in historic buildings, on the banks of the river and in country idylls. Here’s our top 10 to get you started.

George

Sat besides the River Loddon, this Earley-based local is the perfect place to visit for hearty pub fare. They specialise in such classics as hand-battered fish and chips, slow cooked shoulder of lamb, gourmet sausage and an outstanding Sunday lunch.

Address: Loddon Bridge Road, Earley, RG6 7EN

Telephone: 0118 926 1844

The Bull

This beautiful pub is bursting with character. The Bull is situated in a historic building with exposed beams, an open fireplace and a large beer garden. It’s the perfect choice come rain or shine.

Address: High Street, Sonning Reading, RG4 6UP

Royal Oak

Burrata’s at the Royal Oak is a one-of-a-kind pub-cum-restaurant-cum-antiques shop based in Twyford. This eclectic local serves homely pub food, real ales and a varied choice of wines, including a selection from the village’s own Stanlake Park Vineyard. Address: Ruscombe Lane, Ruscombe, Twyford, RG10 9JN

Telephone: 0118 934 5190

George & Dragon

This traditional country pub is a local favourite. It excels in delicious home cooking made with locally sourced produce. We’d recommend dropping by after a four-mile circular country walk. Visit their website for more details on the route.

Address: Church Road, Swallowfield, RG7 1TJ

Telephone: 0118 988 4432

The Crown

This beautiful 16th century pub is a must-visit if you’re looking for a gastronomic experience. This fact is no surprise given that the owner is Heston Blumenthal. The setting is as equally striking as the food, with original exposed beams, outside seating and an open fire.

Address: High Street, Bray, SL6 2AH

Telephone: 01628 621936

Hind’s Head

We realise that we sound like the Heston Blumenthal fan club, but this pub definitely deserves its spot on the round up. Like it’s sister pub, the Hind’s Head is a striking traditional pub with mouth-wateringly good food. They offer a weekend a la carte lunch, three set menus and a fantastic Sunday roast.

Address: High Street, Bray, SL6 2AB

Telephone: 01628 626151

The Little Angel

Sandwiched between the River Thames and a gorgeous cricket pitch, The Little Angel is a must-visit for all those in the area. The charming sloping garden has stunning views, making it the perfect place to nurse a pint.

Address: Remenham Lane, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 2LS

Telephone: 01491 411008

The Bull at Wargrave

This pocket-sized, traditional 15th century brick inn is packed full of charm. It boasts original low beams, a warming fire and a rustic terrace. The Bull offers a well-priced and delicious home cooked menu, from ploughman’s to pies, steaks to sandwiches.

Address: 83 High Street, Wargrave, RG10 8DD

Telephone: 0118 940 3120

Elephant

Needless to say, this Pangbourne hangout features a lot of elephants in its décor. The opulent design brims with vibrant fabrics, oriental rugs and handcrafted Indian furniture. Not only is the interior design worth writing home about, but the real ales, and wine list are also pretty good.

Address: Church Road, Pangbourne, RG8 7AR

Telephone: 0118 984 2244

The Bell Inn

We’ve included The Bell in our pub guide as it really is gloriously good. Honestly, it’s that good that we don’t know where to begin? It’s bucolic Berkshire at its best. Think a rambling pub garden, real ales, and a solid ploughman’s lunch, all set in the beautiful village of Aldworth.

Address: Ambury Road, Aldworth, RG8 9SE

Telephone: 01635 578272
