New Year's Day activities in London

New Year's Day activities in London

Start your year as you mean to go on. Choose between a wide range of activities on New Year's Day from theatre productions to working off the night before.

Whether you want to sample a little culture, continue the festivities or soak up the alcohol, we’ve got it all. Here’s our guide to the best activities in the capital this New Year’s Day. See you in 2017!

Pub lunch

Whether you're hungover or fresh faced on New Year's Day, there's nothing better than gathering up a group of your closets friends and going for a pub lunch. The capital is full of great choices, but a few of our favourites are Woolwich Equitable, Dove & East London Liquor Company.

Take a stroll in Greenwich Park

There's nothing that clears the cobwebs quite like an invigorating stroll on a cold winter's day. One of the best places to do this is Greenwich Park. It's got something for everyone, from woodlands to a stunning viewpoint, plus it’s part of a World Heritage Site.

Hit the West End

Whilst everyone else is in bed reminiscing about the night before, you can make the most of this much-needed Bank Holiday. Seize the day and go to a matinee showing of A Christmas Carol, Art or An Inspector Calls. These are all playing in London's West End.

Take in an exhibition

London is notoriously quiet on New Year's Day. Play to your advantage and go to one of the capital's leading exhibitions. There's a number of great examples to choose from Rauschenberg at the Tate Modern, Zaha Hadid at the Serpentine & Maps and the 20th Century at the British Library.

Enjoy a film fest

Sometimes, all you want to do is curl up in a ball on New Year's Day. Trust us, we've been there. If this is your state of mind on the 1st, then play to your strengths and head straight to your local cinema. With a mix of great events, a wide selection of films and documentaries, plus a nice bar, the Hackney Picturehouse is one of our favourites.

Sweat off in style

Fancy an activity that is both good for the mind, body & soul, yet is utterly invigorating? Then al fresco swimming is your friend. Strip off and jump in to one of London's many lidos for a sense of instant gratification. London Fields Lido is one of our favourites.

Carry on the party

If you’ve still got energy, then continue the New Year celebrations with another night on the town. The O2 know that you’re not alone and so are asking you and all the other 90s kids to relive their youth with a night of DJ EZ.

Soak in the sights of Hackney & beyond

Embrace the great outdoors and take a stroll along the Regent's Canal. Start in Islington and make a pit stop at The Towpath Café (you must try their delicious coffee and sumptuous cakes), continue on through London Fields and end up in Mile End for a well-deserved pint at notorious The Palm Tree.
