August Bank Holiday Weekend 2017 - What’s On in London

Your guide to the must-see events this August Bank Holiday weekend

The August Bank Holiday weekend is almost upon us and to ensure that you make the most of the last Bank Holiday until Christmas we’ve put together a list of the best events in the capital.

Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival is synonymous with the August Bank Holiday and this year is no exception. Head to W10 on Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday and sample some Caribbean beats and culinary treats. Sunday is family day, while Monday hosts the Grand Finale parade.

Address: Notting Hill, Ladbroke Park and Westbourne Grove

Shuffle Festival

Shuffle Festival hosts a weekend-long celebration of community and culture running over the August Bank Holiday. The line-up this year is packed with fantastic films, talks, performances, installations, music and food for adults and children alike. We recommend checking out a Q&A with director Danny Boyle.

Address: Tower Hamlets Cemetary Park, Southern Grove, London, E3 4PX

River Stage

The National Theatre delivers again with this free summer festival on the banks of the River Thames. You can enjoy an eclectic mix of theatre, dance, DJs, outdoor cinema, live music and workshops. It’s also free.

Address: National Theatre, South Bank, London, SE1 9PX

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

This landmark exhibition, now in its fiftieth year, celebrates the best photos from the natural world. Located in the Natural History Museum, the exhibition documents some of the most incredible species on earth.

Address: Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, SW7 5BD

Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power

Forget the roster of big names exhibiting this summer in the capital, it’s ‘Soul of a Nation’ that has won over the capital’s art-loving heart. This exhibition traces African-American art over a turbulent 20-year period (1963-1983). The voice of Martin Luther King even greets you at the door. Highly recommend.

Address: Tate Modern, Bankside, London, SE1 9TJ

Road

Jim Cartwright’s legendary working class classic has been brought to the boards this summer. This 80s phenomenon is a vibrant and tragic tribute to northern life. Full of swagger and nostalgia, it is a reminder of what life was like as a youth in Thatcher’s Britain.

Address: Royal Court Theatre, 50-51 Sloane Square, London, SW1W 8AS

South West Four

SW4 is renowned for bringing London its dance music fix each and every August Bank Holiday weekend, and this year is no different. Enjoy a couple of summer nights fuelled with club anthems, euphoric mixes and a whole lot of love.

Address: Clapham Common, SW4 4DE

WAHALAxPLAY

Known for her expressive patterns and playful colours, Camille Walala has launched her first 3D art installation. Visitors can expect to enjoy immersive mazes, ping-pong tables and puzzles. Tickets are free, but spaces need to be booked in advanced via Eventbrite.

Address: Now Gallery, Peninsula Square, London, SE10 0ES

Hampstead Heath Ponds

If the sun is shining, look to cool down in Hampstead Heath’s open-air swimming ponds. Also, don’t worry if the weather is not perfect, apart from the die-hard regulars, you’ll get the ponds all to yourself.

Address: Hampstead Heath, London, NW3 1BP

Negroni Nights at Rotorino

On Sunday 26th August, Rotorino on the Kingsland Road, is offering a selection of house negronis for only £7 per cocktail. What better way to spend a balmy August evening than with a well-made Italian classic in hand?

Address: 434 Kingsland Road, London, E8 4AA
